The Philadelphia 76ers selected Georgetown University guard Allen Iverson with the first pick in the 1996 draft. It was weird to see Georgetown University, produce a guard as the NBA’s 1st overall selection as the academic institution is known more for it’s centers such as Patrick Ewing (1st pick New York Knicks), Dikembe Mutombo (4th overall pick Denver Nuggets), Alonzo Mourning (2nd overall pick Charlotte Hornets), and Othella Harrington (late first round selection, Houston Rockets)).
Iverson was also the first player under then GW head coach John Thompson to turn pro early and not finishing his four years in Georgetown.
