The game of basketball was invented in the US but yet international basketball and NBA basketball are almost 2 different sports. Why/when/how did the differentiation happen? Did the NBA walk away from the original rules or did international basketball decide to modify the game to accomodate the rest of the world? Thanks.
I appreciate all your answers, but nobody really answered my question, may be i wasn’t very clear. I’m not talking about how good or bad players are, the playing styles or anything else. I’m talking about the differences between international and NBA basketball when it comes to RULES. A good example, the international 3 point line has a different shape than the NBA 3 point line, same goes for the paint area….thanks

/ January 1, 2008International teams just play with different strategies and the governing bodies(FIBA) try to accommodate the majority(as many teams as possible.
Whereas the NBA’s governing bodies also try to accommodate the majority, not the teams but the fans instead to generate maximum revenue.
This is why basketball players outside North America seem to be more fundamentally sound, they play basketball first and impress the fans second. Because of this problem, the US national team lost the last few major tournaments along with top players opting to rest instead of representing their country.
edit:
NBA modified the rules to enhance scoring to accommodate the excitement that fans like to see. FIBA’s rules had been modified from the original rules as basketball evolve as a whole (skill and players’ physical abilities) but modified less compare to NBA’s rules

WRONG!! Basketball was invented in Springfield Mass. Dr. James Naismith was born in Canada. Get your facts straight.
It’s different mainly because europe developed rules that better fit their style of basketball. International ball is a more up tempo type of game, where defense is a lot less enforced than here in the states. Why? Probably because a lot of the time the refs and players speak a different language. Therefore the less the whistle is blown the quicker the game can go.

/ January 1, 2008international basketball or FIBA NEVER modified the game. in fact, it patterned some rules in the NBA like the 4 quarters and the 24 second clock. I think as the rest of the world got better in playing basketball, they have perfected playing with team work unlike the NBA players who like to play one on one most of the time. so when it comes to international games now, USA is having a hard time defending the team work plays of the countries like Spain, Serbia and Argetina to name a few. Plus the three point shooting may have played a role in this difference because the other countries have very good shooters and USA have not been good in three point shooting in international competitions.

/ January 1, 2008First off, the size of the lane has a lot to do with the difference. When a player posts up on the block in the NBA, he is about 8-10 feet from the basket. When a player posts up on the block in FIBA, he is a minimum of 12 feet from the basket. What this means is that a dominant player like Shaq isn’t so dominant because he has farther to go in for a dunk.
Next, FIBA has always allowed zone defenses. This puts a premium on outside shooting and the mid-range jumper because teams can easily collapse help to counter a dominant post player of any size (one of the best post scorers of all time is MJ). At the same time, the NBA elected not to allow zone defenses until recently and even now the defense is not truly a zone – a player can be in the lane guarding no one for only 3 seconds at a time. The end result for the NBA was more dunking. Since dunking and layups are higher percentage shots than mid-range and outside jump shots, the NBA placed a premium on athletic players who were not necessarily good basketball players.
Another big rule change for NBA vs. FIBA is the offensive foul. It is much easier to draw an offensive foul in FIBA than the NBA, so again, the premium is placed on players who can pull up and shoot the mid-range jump shot and not the guys who can get to the rim to dunk. Chances are much higher than the dunkers will also get offensive fouls.
Another reason that FIBA teams tend to beat the USA teams these days is that the FIBA teams play together for years. They know each others moves and they know what each will do in different situations. The USA teams only practice a month or so before the FIBA tournament. And as anyone who has actually played organized basketball knows, a good team will beat a team made up of great individual players.

/ January 1, 2008The biggest impact is because NBA rules was modified to NO ZONE DEFENSE until several years ago. This promotes one-on-one skills and more specialization, like the tall stiffs don’t need to be able to shoot anymore (remember the Knicks vs Spurs final when Chris Dudley was tucked away in the far 3 point line but Duncan had to “guard” him because of the rules). Over time, this changed the skill set of players and playing styles.
